Boy tried to use gun's laser sight in accident

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A 5-year-old boy told police he wanted to activate the laser sight on his father's loaded 9 mm Taurus semi-automatic handgun.

But the handgun discharged, shooting his mother in the lower back. The mother received non-life-threatening injuries, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The incident occurred about 5 p.m. Friday as father Rodney Kelsaw, 31, of the 6000 block of Southcrest Road, was picking up his son on Boone Street.

Kelsaw was charged Monday with felony neglect of a dependent.

Kelsaw told police he had asked his son to move the gun from the front passenger seat and his son attempted to active the laser sight, court documents said.

The boy told police he tried to give his father the gun and his father gave it back to him. When he tried to activate the laser, he “shot his mom,” the boy said.

Kelsaw has a court hearing today.
