3 died after Wells County crash

Three people died after an early morning head-on crash in Wells County, according to a statement from the Wells County Sheriffs Department.

Anthony W. Dager, 26, of New Haven was driving southbound on State Road 1 North of County Road 1100 North at 4:43 a.m. Saturday when he crossed into the northbound lane, striking a vehicle head-on that was traveling toward the Fort Wayne International Airport, the statement said.

All three people in the vehicle that was struck died. The driver, Rebecca R. Prentice, of Ossian, and the front seat passenger, Paul E. Penrod, 64, of Bluffton were pronounced dead on the scene. The back seat passenger, Karen S. Smith, 65, of Bluffton, was flown to Lutheran Hospital by Lutheran Air Helicopter where she later died from her injuries. Prentices age was not yet reported.

Dager was transported by Wells County EMS to Lutheran Hospital. 

The incident remains under investigation.
