Driver dies after crashing car into Salamonie River

Journal Gazette

A 22-year-old Huntington man died when he drove his car into the Salamonie River in Warren, officials said.

Huntington County Coroner Philip S. Zahm said Jeremy C. Ralston was driving south on Main Street in Warren when he failed to stop at the end of the dead end street that once had a bridge that crossed the Salamonie River.

The 2004 Chevrolet Impala Ralston was driving hit a former bridge support and was launched into the air, landing nose first into the river and coming to rest on its top.

The vehicle was discovered in the river just after 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Zahm said it's unclear when the crash occurred, though officials believe it happened after midnight.

Ralston was unrestrained in the vehicle, where he was found. He died at the scene, Zahm said.

An autopsy expected Monday will determine the cause and manor of death, he said.
