Gunshot victim dies at hospital

Rebecca S. Green The Journal Gazette

A man died Monday night at an area hospital after having been reportedly shot at a south side apartment complex.

According to Fort Wayne police, emergency crews were called to the Villages of Hanna Townhouses, formerly Eden Green, at about 6:25 p.m. after a man was reportedly shot.

In an apartment in the 2100 block of Eden Street, officers and paramedics found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later died, according to a Fort Wayne police press release.

In the rain and dark Monday evening, residents of the building looked out of open windows and gathered on a sidewalk while police officers conducted their investigation.

One man came running up from another area of the complex, hollering for information about someone. Turned away from the area, he ran back, obviously frustrated and upset about not being told anything. Officers followed him to a nearby car, and talked to him briefly.

Investigators were speaking with witnesses in the area, but as of late Monday night, no arrests had been made.

The incident remains under investigation by the Allen County coroner’s office, the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County prosecutor’s office.

If the man’s death is declared a homicide, it would be the 15th homicide of 2014.
