Post office worker accused of theft

A local U.S. Postal Service employee is accused of stealing someone’s gift card out of the mail, according to Allen Superior Court documents.

Allen County prosecutors formally charged John H. Hontz, of the 11900 block of Winchester Road, with a felony count of official misconduct and a misdemeanor count of criminal conversion Wednesday.

A local man who sent a greeting card with a $100 Target gift card inside it this past December complained to the postal service that when the greeting card arrived at its destination, the gift card was gone. Target told the man that more than $80 of his gift card had been spent at a local store, according to court documents.

When investigators looked at video footage from that particular store, Hontz was shown using the card, according to court documents. At the time, Hontz worked at a unit where mail damaged during processing is repaired and resealed and items found loose in the mail are temporarily stored.

A warrant for Hontz’s arrest has been issued.
