A Pennsylvania semi driver died early Friday in a one-vehicle crash on U.S. 20 at Interstate 69 in Angola, Angola police said.

Shawn H. Spencer, 44, of Rome, Pennsylvania, died at the scene of the 6:20 a.m. crash, police said in a statement.

Police said Spencer was driving a semi hauling steel west on U.S. 20 when the truck lost its load, which covered the roadway.

Westbound U.S. 20 was closed to through traffic for about five hours, police said. They said their investigation continues.

Victim in 2-car fatality identified

A Fort Wayne man has been identified as the victim of a two-vehicle crash at Ludwig and Huguenard roads Thursday night, the Allen County coroner’s office said Friday.

Gary Gilliom, 62, was extricated from his car after the 5:30 p.m. car-Jeep crash and taken to a hospital, where he died a short time after admission, the coroner’s office said in a statement following an autopsy.

The cause of death is pending further investigation and testing, the statement said.

Police have said the car was traveling west on Ludwig when it attempted to turn south onto Huguenard, but did not yield the right of way and pulled into the Jeep’s path.

After the impact, the car left the west side of Huguenard and struck a utility box and utility pole, police said. They said the driver of the Jeep complained of chest pain but was not taken from the scene by paramedics.

Gilliom’s death is the 11th traffic fatality in Allen County this year, the coroner’s office said.

The crash is being investigated by Fort Wayne police and the coroner’s office.

Teen arrested in armed robbery

A Fort Wayne man is accused of donning a mask before robbing a south-side CVS on Thursday, according to Fort Wayne police reports.

Officers were called to the CVS at 3918 S. Calhoun St. at about 2:51 p.m. and were told by witnesses a man lurking around the building put on a mask, went inside and came barging out as the security alarm sounded. One witness told officers she saw money coming from the man’s pants as he raced down the street, the police reports said.

Employees and customers inside the store said the man came inside, approached the register and yelled at a cashier to hand over all the money. He then left with an undisclosed amount of cash, the police reports said. One witness told officers she followed the man running from the store to a nearby apartment and got a look at him as he doffed the mask.

At the apartment, officers found 19-year-old Dalton John Wagner with a wad of cash in his pants pocket.

Wagner ended up at the detective bureau for questioning and was then booked into Allen County Lockup on a felony robbery charge, according to court records and police reports.

Hawthorne Suites robbed by 2 men

Two men, one armed with a gun, robbed the Hawthorne Suites at 4919 Lima Road early Friday morning, according to Fort Wayne police reports.

The men came to the hotel at about 2:15 a.m. and were buzzed in through the locked door by a clerk. After they made it inside, one of the men brandished a silver handgun and demanded cash. Cash from the register was taken and the men then fled the hotel on foot toward a nearby Shell gas station.

A review of surveillance footage showed three men approached the door prior the robbery and one of the men waited outside while the other two entered the building. No arrests have been made.
