INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana saw its graduation rate creep up slightly in 2018, the Indiana Department of Education said Wednesday.
Locally, most public high schools in Allen County kept up. Only three of the 12 schools fell short – two in Fort Wayne Community Schools and one in East Allen County Schools.
The 2018 state graduation rate was 88.1 percent – up from 87.2 percent in 2017. That includes some students who are given a waiver under state law.
“With the increase to Indiana's graduation rate, it is evident our schools are committed to the academic success of our students,” said Jennifer McCormick, Indiana superintendent of public instruction. “While there is still work to be done, we will continue to partner with local districts to ensure every student graduates prepared for life beyond high school.”
Area districts and high schools varied.
Both Northwest Allen County and Southwest Allen County schools – which each have one high school – had a graduation rate of about 96 percent.
“NACS is proud of our students for achieving a high school diploma and increasing their likelihood of becoming involved community members,” Superintendent Chris Himsel said in a statement. “We are pleased that this is our ninth consecutive year for exceeding a 95 percent graduation rate.”
At 86.4 percent, Fort Wayne Community's districtwide rate fell from its previous rate (89 percent) and below the state average but – as spokeswoman Krista Stockman noted – not by much, which is notable for urban school districts.
Fluctuations are natural given that each year's rate is based on a different group of students, Stockman said.
“Obviously, we never like to see it go backwards,” she said.
Of the Fort Wayne schools, three netted rates of 90 percent or above – Northrop, Snider and Wayne. South Side's rate was 81 percent, and North Side's was 75.8 percent. The percentages don't take fifth-year seniors into account, Stockman said, noting North Side has an increase of those students this year.
East Allen's districtwide rate was close to the state average at 88 percent. East Allen University performed the best with 97 percent. It was followed by Leo Junior-Senior High School, 92.7 percent; Heritage Junior-Senior High School, 92.3 percent; Woodlan Junior-Senior High School, 91 percent; and New Haven High School, 78.7 percent.
Only four schools in northeast Indiana had perfect graduation rates: Bishop Dwenger and Blackhawk Christian in Allen County; Lakewood Park Christian in DeKalb County; and Southern Wells in Wells County, the only public school to accomplish such a feat.
The Department of Education also released the federal graduation rate, which uses slightly different equations and standards. The federal graduation rate was 87.2 percent. With the previous exclusion of the general diploma due to the Every Student Success Act, Indiana's 2018 federal graduation rate is not comparable with that of past years.
