NACS to consider stopgap leader

Superintendent on leave since Dec. 17

ASHLEY SLOBODA | The Journal Gazette

The Northwest Allen County Schools board will meet Monday – the final day of the superintendent's leave of absence – to consider a temporary superintendent recommendation.

The special meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the board room, which is accessible through Door 3 at 13119 Coldwater Road. It also will be livestreamed on YouTube.

Chris Himsel's leave of absence – Dec. 17 to Jan. 31 – received board approval Jan. 10. That night, Himsel told The Journal Gazette he was addressing health concerns. He wouldn't elaborate further about whom he was referring to.

The board Jan. 10 designated Gloria Shamanoff as acting superintendent. She has been assistant superintendent since 2000.

No details were available Thursday about the temporary superintendent recommendation listed on Monday's agenda.

It is apparently the sole reason for the meeting. The other agenda items – including board and audience comments – are routine.

Himsel has been superintendent since 2010, making him the longest-serving public school superintendent in Allen County. He was the 2017 Indiana Superintendent of the Year.

He previously led Kokomo-Center Consolidated School Corp.
