Education One, a public charter school-authorizing entity based at Trine University, granted the Timothy L. Johnson Academy a two-year charter renewal.
The academy on Werling Drive in Fort Wayne now has a two-year charter effective June 30 through June 30, 2018.
The school was rated an "F" school in the A-F state accountability rating system for 2014. The two previous years, the school received a "D."
The school, founded in 2002, lost its charter with Ball State University in 2013.
Two years ago, the board brought in Dawn Starks, a former Fort Wayne Community Schools principal, to turn things around at the school. Education One gave the school an initial deadline of Dec. 31, 2014, to make changes favorable to a turnaround.
The announcement of the charter renewal was made by Leona Group of Michigan, the charter school’s managing agent.
"It’s been an honor to be a part of the Timothy L. Johnson Academy family and to experience the growth and successes of the academy throughout the years," Ian Rolland, board president, said in a statement Tuesday. "We look forward to a bright future for the academy."
