Website will help in candidate analysis

Cathy Duchovic

Over the past month, various neighborhood and community groups have sponsored opportunities to meet candidates for the local election in November.

It is wonderful that so many people have turned out to interact with candidates from both parties. Interesting questions have been raised by constituents at some of the forums. Congratulations to all the candidates who have made themselves available for the question/answer sessions. Kudos to all the participating citizens.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, multi-issue political organization which encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and broadens understanding of public policy through education and advocacy.

To assist the public in learning more about how each candidate stands on issues, the League of Women Voters of Fort Wayne has secured responses from municipal candidates in Fort Wayne and New Haven. All responses were entered directly by each candidate into the national nonpartisan website maintained by the League of Women Voters Education Fund (Vote411.org).

Neither the national nor Fort Wayne League of Women Voters edited any of the information entered by the candidates. The League, as a nonpartisan organization, does not support or oppose any candidate or party.

The League submitted questions to each candidate for mayor, city clerk and City Council in Fort Wayne and New Haven. Candidates were asked to identify their own priority issues and how those issues would be addressed. In addition, they were asked to identify how they would balance economic development and the needs of low-income citizens, how they would engage citizens, and how they would educate themselves about issues.

The candidate responses are posted on Vote411.org. At that site, click on “See What's on your Ballot.” Enter your local address with ZIP code (information is not stored).

The candidates who will be on your ballot will be available for review. You will be able to compare responses side by side from candidates for each office.

The League encourages you to learn more about where our municipal candidates stand on issues.

Check out Vote411.org. Information is at your fingertips! And, be sure to vote!
