Trine University’s softball team is off to the Division III World Series. And they’re getting national attention for doing it in style – clinching the 3-1 Saturday victory over SUNY Geneseo with a hidden-ball trick in Angola.
With a runner on second base, catcher Victoria Porter threw the ball back to pitcher Kate Saupe, who spun and acted as if she was throwing the ball to second but that she’d lost the handle on it. Helping to sell the play were shortstop Makenna Hartline and outfielder Michaela Hartline, as Saupe gingerly tagged the runner sprinting to third, ending the game.
The play was No. 9 on ESPN’s Top 10 of the day. (It's above.)
Porter was 2 for 3. Saupe (16-2) allowed one run and seven hits over seven innings, striking out one and walking five.
Trine (34-6) advanced to the World Series at the University of Texas at Tyler and will face Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday.
