Dallas Cowboys linebacker and Fort Wayne native Jaylon Smith announced Friday the creation of the Jaylon Smith Minority Entrepreneurship Institute, a foundation aimed at connecting investors with minority entrepreneurs looking to get their businesses started.
“I'm proud to announce that I'll be focusing on minority entrepreneurship in an effort to help close the economic & educational gap,” Smith wrote on Twitter. “I'm committed to passing along the education & opportunities others have provided me by creating the Jaylon Smith MEI.”
Smith, who played linebacker at Bishop Luers and then at Notre Dame before reaching the NFL, also announced an Indiana showcase for the MEI to be held at the Parkview Field Suite Level Lounge on July 12. The event will work like the reality show “Shark Tank,” with contestants pitching business ideas to established entrepreneurs.
Smith's foundation has a stated goal of investing a total of $300,000 into the contest's three winners in the first year. To apply for a spot at the July event, go to www.tfaforms.com/4731209.
