New Haven freshman wins state title

Pair of unbeatens to meet in NECC boys championship

After making plenty of noise during the boys wrestling regular season, New Haven freshman Julianna Ocampo announced her presence in the girls wrestling scene on Friday, winning the a state title at 106 pounds at the IHSGW State Finals at Kokomo Memorial Gymnasium.

Ocampo advanced to the finals by pinning her first two opponents in 43 and 51 seconds, then shut out Northeastern’s Heather Crull in the championship, 4-0. Fellow Northeast 8 squad Bellmont saw two wrestlers perform well also, as Andrea Hernandez (126) and Trinity Coyne (138) both placed second.

Bishop Luers’ Dennise Galicia (182), Wayne’s Daniya Simpson (195) and Columbia City’s Haley Thompson (250) also finished second, while Eastside’s Timmery Hunter (152) placed third. New Haven tied North Montgomery for fourth in the team competition, with Bellmont earning eighth place.

Girls basketball

NORTHROP 72, NORTH SIDE 21: At Northrop, four Bruins scored in double figures as the hosts won their second game in as many days. Saniya and Nevaeh Jackson both finished with 13 for Northrop (11-5, 5-2 SAC).

SOUTH SIDE 66, CONCORDIA 59: At Concordia, Olivia Smith scored 30 as Archers coach Juanita Goodwell earned her 200th career victory. Justice Billingsley added 20 for South Side (3-11, 2-5 SAC), while Concordia stayed winless in conference play (3-14, 0-6).

ACAC Tournament

WOODLAN 58, HERITAGE 29: In Woodburn, the Warriors got out to a 13-0 lead and cruised into the finals. Woodlan (15-3) will face Jay County tonight in the finals at South Adams, as the Patriots of Portland handled Southern Wells, 64-22.

NECC Tournament

GARRETT 50, PRAIRIE HEIGHTS 34: In Butler, Nataley Armstrong dished out 12 assists and Bailey Kelham scored 22 points to propel the Class 3A No. 2 Railroaders (19-1) to their first title game since the 2003-04 season.

ANGOLA 46, CHURUBUSCO 18: In Albion, the Hornets stormed out to a 28-10 halftime lead to advance to their fifth straight championship game. Angola (12-7) will face Garrett tonight at West Noble for the conference tourney title, looking to avenge a 52-38 loss on Nov. 23.

Boys basketball

NEW HAVEN 69, LEO 63: In New Haven, the Bulldogs surprised the Lions to stand as the lone remaining unbeaten squad in Northeast 8 play despite 35 points from Caedmon Bontrager. Jakar Williams scored 19 as one of a trio in double figures for New Haven (5-6, 3-0); Class 3A No. 1 Leo suffered just its second loss of the year (8-2, 2-1).

ACAC Tournament

WOODLAN 58, BLUFFTON 43: At Woodlan, the Warriors followed the lead of their female counterparts, earning a berth in the title game. Woodlan (9-6) faces Jay County (10-2), a 67-31 winner over Southern Wells (1-8), in tonight’s final at South Adams.

NECC Tournament

CENTRAL NOBLE 61, FREMONT 42: In Albion, Connor Essegian scored 24, Logan Gard added 18 and the Class 2A No. 1 Cougars advanced to their third straight title game. Ethan Bock led the Eagles (7-3) with 14 points; Central Noble (14-0) stayed perfect on the year.

EASTSIDE 59, PRAIRIE HEIGHTS 31: In Butler, the Blazers opened the second half on a 12-0 run to take control and earn a berth in the championship tonight at West Noble. Playing in its first NECC tourney final since 1997, Class 2A No. 6 Eastside (14-0) will look to end a 38-year title drought against fellow unbeaten Central Noble.
