Northrop girls continue recent hot stretch


With just a week until its Class 4A Snider Sectional opener, the Northrop girls looked the part of a team peaking at the right time Tuesday, winning at Columbia City, 51-47. Amanda Thatcher scored 15 points for the Bruins (13-6), who won for the fifth time in six games while handing the Eagles just their second defeat of the year.

Addison Baxter led all scorers with 16 points for Columbia City, but Northrop limited the hosts to a 25 percent shooting performance as the Eagles (18-2) lost for the second time in three games after winning 17 straight to open the year.

GARRETT 47, FREMONT 35: In Fremont, the Class 3A No. 2 Railroaders assured themselves of at least a tie for the Northeast Corner Conference regular season title to pair with their NECC Tournament championship.

Nataley Armstrong, who entered Tuesday’s game ranked third nationally according to MaxPreps at 9.2 assists per game, dished out just a pair of helpers, but led all scorers with 14 for Garrett (22-1, 9-0), extending its win streak to 20 games. Jada Rhonehouse scored 10 and pulled down 11 rebounds for Fremont (6-15, 2-8).

WARSAW 56, ELKHART 47: In Elkhart, Abby Sanner led all scorers with 18 as the Tigers (16-6) knocked off their fellow Penn Sectional foe.

HUNTINGTON NORTH 52, SOUTH SIDE 39: At South Side, the Vikings outscored the Archers by nine in the fourth quarter to take the preview of a first-round matchup in the Huntington North Sectional. Olivia Smith scored 28 for South Side (3-15); Huntington North (17-4) won its sixth straight.

Boys basketball

NORTHROP 66, CANTERBURY 48: At Northrop, a 29-8 third quarter advantage propelled the Bruins to a non-conference victory. Jalen Jackson shot 9 of 14 from the field for a game-high 26 points for Northrop (8-7), while Will Russell finished with 15 for the Cavaliers (3-11).

WAWASEE 58, BETHANY CHRISTIAN 48: In Syracuse, Keaton Dukes’ 24 points helped the Warriors (5-8) snap a three-game slide.

NORWELL 55, BISHOP LUERS 43: In Ossian, the Knights of Wells County won the second and fourth quarters by eight points apiece. Jake Parker paced Norwell (13-3) with 15 points as the hosts won their fifth in a row, and Nick Thompson netted 15 for Luers (2-11).

NEW HAVEN 82, CONCORDIA 67: In New Haven, the Bulldogs used a 17-0 run over a 4:30 stretch in the middle two quarters to take control. Darrion Brooks shot 11 of 15 from the floor to lead New Haven (7-7) with 27 points, while Ajani Washington paced Concordia (6-7) with a game-high 28.


CONCORDIA BOYS 95, WAYNE 48, BISHOP LUERS 33: At the Helen P. Brown Natatorium, the Cadets won 11 events to knock off their SAC foes. Aiden Gleave and Lance Chandler went 1-2 in the 100-yard butterfly for Concordia.

CONCORDIA GIRLS 72, WAYNE 94, BISHOP LUERS 43: At the Helen P. Brown Natatorium, Alli Dubay and Jordyn Nygaard finished first and second for the Cadets in the 200 freestyle, while Adrianna Germann and Katie McKay took the top two spots in the 50 freestyle for Concordia.
