MIAMI – As expected, the St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Adam Wainwright on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain. Right-hander Ryan Helsley, who had been optioned to Class AAA Memphis on Sunday, was recalled to take Wainwright's place on the roster.
The 37-year-old Wainwright was hurt running out a double in the fifth inning in Sunday night's game, and he returned to St. Louis on Monday to be examined by doctors. At 5-6, he is tied for the team lead in wins and he is second in strikeouts at 61 and in innings pitched at 701/3. Sunday, he became the sixth Cardinals pitcher to surpass 2,000 innings for the franchise.
Outfielder Alex Dickerson has been traded to the San Francisco Giants from the San Diego Padres for minor league right-hander Franklin Van Gurp. Dickerson will join Triple-A Sacramento. He has been primarily with Triple-A El Paso this season aside from a 12-game stint with the Padres. Van Gurp is 2-1 with a 4.54 ERA over 18 relief appearances between Class A Augusta and Double-A Richmond. ... The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-hander Jordan Lyles on the 10-day injured list with tightness in his left hamstring. Right-hander Montana DuRapau was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis before Monday night's game against the Atlanta Braves.
