ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rays placed oft-injured center fielder Kevin Kiermaier on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left thumb and recalled outfielder Guillermo Heredia from Triple-A Durham. An MRI Sunday found the ligament intact and no surgery required.
Kiermaier was hurt diving headfirst into first base on an infield single in the eighth inning of the Rays' 2-1, 11-inning loss to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.
This is the fourth consecutive year Kiermaier, a Bishop Luers graduate, has been sidelined by sliding or diving injuries.
Milwaukee All-Star right-hander Brandon Woodruff left his start at Arizona in the fourth inning with an undisclosed injury. Woodruff (11-3) grimaced after throwing a second strike to Diamondbacks leadoff hitter Tim Locasto, and Milwaukee's trainer immediately ran out with manager Craig Counsell. After a brief discussion, Woodruff slowly walked to the dugout. ... A 3-year-old boy in Cleveland went to the hospital after getting hit by a ball off the bat of the Indians' Francisco Lindor. “It stinks, man,” Lindor said. “You don't want to get nobody hurt. I have heard the kid is doing well. He's in the hospital. He's getting checked and all I know is he's in stable condition and he's doing good.” The Indians said in an e-mail after Cleveland's game with Kansas City they could not disclose any information.
