Joey Cantillo pitched five shutout innings, Justin Lopez belted a home run and the TinCaps snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-0 win in the opener of a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Tuesday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Cantillo has been the Midwest League's best pitcher last five weeks and he remained red hot against the Hot Rods (38-27), striking out four without a walk and giving up just one hit, a single to shortstop Wander Franco, the best prospect in baseball. Cantillo got the win to improve to 4-2 and his ERA since May 3 is 0.72.
The TinCaps (29-34) took the lead in the second when Lopez homered to right-center, his sixth long ball of the year, tying his career-high. All six of his homers have come since May 15.
Fort Wayne added an insurance run in the eighth on a Blake Hunt RBI single and broke the game open in the ninth when Xavier Edwards drilled a two-run double. Edwards went 2 for 5 with a run scored and is leading the league in hitting at .342.
The TinCaps' bullpen picked up where Cantillo left off, working four shutout innings. Angel Acevedo, Cody Tyler and Jose Quezada all worked scoreless outings.
